Gates for the White Gallery, Dundee

Gates for 'The White Gallery', Dundee

The location of the site within the growing cultural quarter of Dundee gave a distinct opportunity to install some contemporary gates that would attract appropriate attention to the new gallery and set the scene for the space beyond

The design is primarily inspired by the system of proportions and measurement that Le Corbusier referred to as the Modulor. Research found that “it is natural for humans to try and find harmonious relationships between ratios” (Rowland 1965). It was decided to explore this notion as a concept for the gate commissioned for the entrance to 'The White Gallery' / Pi Architects in Dundee, as the scientific rationales behind what is and is not aesthetically pleasing relate to both the realization of architecture the process of creating artwork composition per se

The gate was fabricated from mild steel, galvanized, and finished in black

The client wanted a unique piece that would require little maintenance. The main inspiration for the design was the beautiful hillscape views that could be seen from the back of the client's property
